AAMP Board of Directors met on Tuesday from 8:30 am - 4:00 pm to discuss a variety
of topics, including AAMP's financial status, future AAMP
convention locations, AAMP's website development, as well
as AAMP's membership services.

Pre-Convention
Workshop
AAMP's pre-convention workshop focused on utilizing inedible materials for profit to combat rendering costs. Some of your industry colleagues discussed how they discovered that some of those materials that used to be sent to be rendered can be further processed into profitable pet food and/or pet treats. They presented on how they have transformed raw materials that were worth nothing into a niche market of pet food items that now create substantial profit.

President's Reception

The
president's reception, hosted by Daniel Glier, was held at The Edge located in the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino on Wednesday evening.
The event gave AAMP members
an opportunity to make new acquaintances and reunite
with old friends and colleagues in the meat industry. |

The exhibit hall opened at 1:00 pm with a presentation by AAMP President, Daniel Glier, while surrounded by members of the AAMP Board of Directors and convention attendees

exhibit hall was filled with 136 booths representing 84 suppliers exhibiting throughout the three-day tradeshow. |
Welcome Reception
The Welcome Reception was held at the Reno Aces Baseball Stadium. Members of the Northeast Meat Processors Association (NMPA) greeted attendees as they arrived at the reception for a relaxing evening.

American Cured Meat Championships
Although the 2011 American Cured Meat Championships began on Thursday afternoon, products were evaluated throughout the day on Friday by experienced judges from all sectors of the meat industry. A total of 536 products were entered in 26 classes, including this year's Annual Featured Class of
Fully Cooked, Cured, Smoked or Unsmoked Poultry Sausage.

Stuffed Pig Demonstrations
|
|
Attendees looking for a new catering idea attended this demonstration on Friday morning. Angelo Ibleto, Angelo’s Meats, Petaluma, CA, showed the entire process from deboning the pig and stuffing it, to preparing it for the smoker. Attendees were also able to sample this product at the end.

American Cured Meat Championships Award Ceremony
Awards were presented in all 26 categories. The Clarence Knebel Best of Show Memorial Award went to Maplewood Meats, Green Bay, WI. The best-of-show product was Canadian-Style Bacon in the Cured Specialty Meat Products Class. For a complete list of winners click here.

The Cured Meat Excellence Award was also presented. This award was designed to acknowledge the processor that competed the best throughout the entire American Cured Meat Championships (ACMC). It was awarded to Jon Frohling, Frohling Meats Inc., Hecla, SD. |

The 2011 inductees in to the Cured Meats Hall of Fame were Rick Reams, RJ's Meats & Groceries, Hudson, WI, and Frank Stoysich, Jr., Frank Stoysich Meats, Omaha, NE.

Dr. Roger Mandigo, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, NE, was awarded the 2011 AAMP Achievement Award on Saturday morning at the conclusion of the American Cured Meat Championships Awards. For the past 45 years, Dr. Mandigo has provided the meat industry with science and technology counsel and solutions for processed meats issues for very small entrepreneurial meat processors up through the largest national and international commerical meat processors.

Stephen F. Krut Scholarship Award
The 2011 recipient of the Stephen F. Krut Scholarship Award was Jessica Bussard, Lexington, KY.

Golden Cleaver Award
The AAMP Golden Cleaver Trophy acknowledges the member who has recruited the highest number of new members to join the American Association of Meat Processors. the 2011 Golden Cleaver Award went to Jon Frohling, Frohling Meats Inc., Hecla, SD.

Saturday Evening Social
Attendees enjoyed a casual evening on Saturday. During the evening the distinguished Knowlton Award and Achievement Award were presented, and the Grand Prize winner was drawn.
Jason Jennings, Jennings Premium Meats, New Franklin, MO was the recipient of the 2011 Knowlton Award. This was awarded by Meatingplace magazine. The award honors excellence in the U.S. red meat industry in the areas of innovation, business success, leadership and industry contributions and is named after former Hormel Foods Chairman Richard L. Knowlton.

The 2011 Grand Prize winner was Linn & Melinda Merindorf, Merindorf Meats and More, Mason, MI. The grand prize is a paid trip for two to the 2012 American Convention of Meat Processors in St. Paul, MN, July 26-28, 2012. The trip includes airfare, four nights at the Crowne Plaza St. Paul - Riverfront, convention registration, plus welcome reception and closing social tickets for two.
